The pour over is one of the simplest and most rewarding ways to brew coffee. With just a few pieces of equipment and a little practice, you can produce a clean, flavourful cup that highlights the unique characteristics of your beans.
What You Need
- Pour over dripper (we recommend the Hario V60)
- Paper filter
- Freshly ground coffee (medium-fine)
- Gooseneck kettle
- Scales and timer
The Method
Ratio: 15g coffee to 250ml water
Water temperature: 92-96°C
Total brew time: 2:30 – 3:00 minutes
- Rinse your filter with hot water to remove any papery taste
- Add your ground coffee and create a small well in the centre
- Start your timer and pour 30ml of water in a circular motion — this is the bloom. Wait 30 seconds.
- Pour the remaining water slowly in concentric circles, keeping the water level consistent
- Let it drain completely and serve immediately
Tips for Success
Grind size is everything. Too fine and your brew will be bitter and slow. Too coarse and it will taste weak and sour. Aim for a consistency similar to table salt.

Great guide! I switched from French press to V60 after reading this and the difference is incredible. So much more clarity in the cup.
What grinder would you recommend for pour over? I am currently using a blade grinder and think that might be holding me back.
